CAC / Contemporary Arts Center

The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) is a multi-disciplinary organization and has served as New Orleans’ leading contemporary arts organization since incorporation in 1976. It was founded by a group of artists, community activists and business people in response to a community need for an exhibition and performance space for contemporary artists, and for a place where artists could interact for creative dialogue. The CAC is dedicated to the presentation, production, and promotion of the art of our time. It accomplishes this by organizing curated exhibitions, performances and programs, educating and enlarging audiences, and encouraging collaboration among diverse artists, institutions, communities, and supporters.

Since its inception in 1976, the CAC has dedicated two floors, about 10,000 square feet of gallery space, of the four-story building, to rotating exhibitions throughout the year. The CAC is also home to artists’ bold experiments in theater, performance art, dance, music, writing, and sculpture; as well as educational programs.

The CAC’s theater is host to plays, dance events, concerts and performances, and New Orleans Ballet Theatre and The Schramel Conservatory are housed in their ballet studio. The Education Department hosts a myriad of programs, including: Artists for a Day field trips and their annual Summer Art Camp, which introduces local children to all art forms.
