Founded in 1898, by Gaspar Vargas in Tecalitlán, Jalisco, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitián is considered the most important and influential group in the history of mariachi music, playing an integral role in the evolution of the genre.

In the 1930s, its leadership was taken over by his son, Silvestre Vargas, who is considered the greatest mariachi organizer and visionary of all time. The majority of prominent mariachi musicians have passed through its ranks, including arrange Rubén Fuentes and trumpet player Miguel Martínez.
For more than 60 years, Mariachi Vargas has been the model for the urban mariachi tradition.
